BLUFLOC ANIONIC POLYACRYLAMIDE

Short description

Blufloc APAM is an off-white granular polymer powder with at least 89% solids and a particle-size specification of 20–100 mesh. It can be evaluated within drilling-fluid filtration-control formulations, with grade selection based on measured filtrate behavior, mud properties and the complete additive package. The featured packaging is a 25 kg PE bag.

Product overview

Fluid-loss control concerns the movement of filtrate from a drilling fluid into a permeable formation. Polymer choice can influence liquid-phase behavior and interactions among fluid components, but performance must be measured in the actual formulation. Blufloc APAM should be screened alongside the mud solids and any dedicated filtration-control additives.

A general APAM specification does not provide a numerical filtrate-loss guarantee. The selected grade must be tested under relevant pressure, temperature and aging conditions. Drilling-fluid filtration control also differs from treating major lost-circulation pathways; a soluble polymer should not be specified as a universal replacement for bridging or lost-circulation materials.

Product benefits

Clear powder specifications

Clear powder specifications support procurement and preparation of candidate formulations.

Grade-based comparison

Grade-dependent polymer properties allow comparison of filtration response with rheological changes.

Additive compatibility testing

Compatibility testing helps determine whether APAM contributes value alongside the existing filtration-control package.

Molecular weight and anionic degree are family ranges, not a single grade specification. Confirm the selected grade and agreed supply criteria before ordering. ISO 9001 refers to the manufacturer’s quality management system, not a guarantee of application performance.

Grade selection for this application

Start with the base-fluid composition, solids distribution, target filtrate volume and acceptable filter-cake properties. Include salinity, hardness, pH and the expected temperature history. These inputs are more useful for grade selection than a general request for a high-viscosity polymer.

Distinguish the cause of fluid losses before selecting treatment. If the issue involves fractures, coarse permeability or severe whole-mud loss, obtain an appropriate well-specific bridging strategy. If the objective is filtration adjustment, compare APAM-containing formulations with the existing program at equal test conditions.

Application evaluation and use

1

Measure the baseline filtration and rheology of the fully prepared mud before adding candidate polymer.

2

Run a grade and dosage series while holding solids content, water chemistry and the other additives constant.

3

Compare filtrate volume and cake condition after representative aging, using pressure and temperature appropriate to the project.

4

Confirm that any improvement is retained without exceeding pumpability, gel-strength or solids-control limits.

Solution preparation and dosing

Use clean, compatible make-up water and add the powder gradually into an established mixing flow. Avoid dumping powder in one location, which can create lumps with dry cores. The TDS gives 0.1–0.5% as general solution-preparation guidance. If specified on an as-supplied powder mass basis, this corresponds to 1–5 kg of powder per 1,000 kg of final solution; agree the concentration basis for the project.

Allow approximately one hour of agitation as a starting reference, then confirm complete hydration. Water quality, temperature, grade and equipment affect the required time. The TDS’s 200–400 rpm reference is equipment dependent and should not be scaled to a different tank solely by rpm. Avoid severe shear after hydration. Determine the final treatment dosage through the application tests described above.

Packaging storage and handling

The featured packaging is a 25 kg PE bag with an inner plastic liner. The TDS also lists 25 kg kraft paper or PE bags and 750 kg net big bags. Store powder dry, protected from direct sunlight and at 0–35°C. Keep opened packaging tightly closed. Consult the current SDS for handling, spill control and personal protection.

Frequently asked questions

Is APAM the same as polyanionic cellulose used in drilling

No. Polyacrylamide and polyanionic cellulose are different polymers. Also distinguish drilling PAC cellulose from Bluwat PAC coagulant, which is polyaluminium chloride.

Does this powder replace all fluid-loss additives

No. Its contribution is formulation dependent. Dedicated filtration polymers and properly designed solids may still be required to achieve the target fluid-loss behavior.

Can it stop every lost-circulation event

No. Filtrate control and whole-mud loss are different problems. Significant losses require diagnosis and a well-specific treatment program.
